Jay Carney: Millions Leaving the Workforce Because People Are Getting Old

QUESTION:

On the unemployment numbers that came out on Friday, unaligned economists cheered them as very good news.

Not to dimish that, still there are 19 million underemployed or unemployment numbers. As these people re-enter the workforce. How concerned is the White House that these number will inevitablely have to see a dip before we see real recovery as these people reenter the workforce.

JAY CARNEY:

I think there are some of those, I suppose, who don't wish us well politically have tried to make a point about this and the facts are in these most recent numbers this is not an issue of people leaving the workforce. That the numbers are positive across the board.

Now what we have said is...

QUESTION:

That's a reality! That's not a political point to score. Thats a reality that people stopped looking for work and then they have to re-enter.

CARNEY:

Well, look at some of the facts. A large percentage of that is due to younger people getting more education which in the end is an economic positive. There is a fact this increase in the number of people leaving the workforce has been a trend and a fact since 2000 because of an aging population. Which is not say this is wholey disregarded as an issue.

The underlying fact is that job creation remains a paramount objective in our economic policy and should be the paramount objective for congress as well.

I think I have a slide I can point to you. The issue here is that everything we can do...

Look what I think is important to note here is that the size of the hole we are in and the steady progess that has taken place since the President's policies have taken effect. And we need to continue to work with Congress to extend the payroll tax cut through the end of the calendar year.

And congress needs to make sure it doesn't muck up anything we've done so far.

What do you think?

Organic Food and Liberal Ideology

A conservative vegetarian will eat his vegetables and leave you alone. A liberal vegetarian will eat his and then demand that you only eat vegetables, too. And this is one of the big differences between liberals and conservatives across the board
