About the Show
On Thanksgiving Day in 1999, a five-year-old boy washed up in an inner tube in the Florida Straits. His mother drowned while trying to escape Communist Cuba for a better life in America. Little did anyone predict that little Elián González would become the key figure in a custody battle and immigration tug-o-war between Fidel Castro and the Clinton administration. The conflict came to a head when Elián was seized by federal agents in a controversial and aggressive pre-dawn raid. Many say Elián's story changed the course of history and became a symbol of post-Cold War tensions between the U.S. and Cuba.
